Karen Marquardt is a professional artist based in the United States. She is known for her unique abstract flower paintings — a pause for spirit, beauty and nature. She lives and works in southern California.
The artwork
In her flower artwork, Karen Marquardt captures a quiet moment of
perfect balance — a lyrical dance of peacefulness, beauty, whimsy, God and relationship. Her fine art draws on studies in architecture, Japanese arts, and spirituality.
Marquardt first lays down an ethereal background texture. Then, she pairs the strength and boldness of the ink lines with the softness of the watercolor. Symbols and a chop mark complete each painting.
Karen’s story
Karen Marquardt was fascinated with art since she was young. She returned to art school in her early thirties with a move from Wisconsin to the San Francisco Bay Area with a stay at the Green Gulch Zen Center along the way.
She started painting in oils, but for environmental reasons switched
to watercolor. After completing her studies, Karen created abstract images for many years and sold her fine art in San Francisco galleries including the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery.
Why plants?
Karen began painting flower artwork when a move for her family took her to the warm, lush area of southern California. She often played in the woods near her home in Wisconsin making wildflower soup when she was a child, visited her grandparents’ farms and helped in the large family garden. Incorporating plants in her fine art felt like “coming home.”

“I am excited to share with you my new modern paintings of flowers and plants in watercolor and ink.
Incorporating my love of plants and lines, I make art to capture images that speak to me in a lyrical dance.
I use thin, transparent layers to create a world of subtle and bright colors, uncertain dimension, and inner light.
With texture and a sense of whimsy, I see life and nature with an uplifting spirit!”
